1960 Ashley 1172
Registration No. CGE 788
These Ashley 1172 photo's and details were emailed to me by
Robert Dye, the owner/builder in
May 2017
We swapped a few emails and motoring memories, (as us oldies do),
and I have combined the Ashley details as follows:
I was interested in your webpage about the Italian owned Ashley 1172. I partially built one in 1960-63 with a friend, I lived
in Cumbria and was an art student in Carlisle at the time.
Ours was based on a 1950's Ford Anglia or Prefect.
I sold it unfinished, as it was in the photos, to another student,
when I left college.
I cannot remember the name of the student who bought the car
from me, but he studied at Carlisle College of Art,
which is now Cumbria Institute of the Arts.
You are correct, as you say we are both in our 70's.
Unfortunately I have very little extra to offer about that Ashley,
except that I got the chassis and the Ashley components from a neighbour of ours when I lived in Brampton, Cumbria with my parents.
He had started the project but lost interest when he moved from Brampton to Walbottle, in the western suburb of Newcastle.
His name was Alex McKay and he was in the aeronautics industry,
as was my father. Alex came from Scotland so I
assume he acquired the donor car from there.
Alex is probably not around anymore, but an
enquiry might bear some fruit.
The two photos I supplied are outside our house in Brampton.
I am the younger person and the older gent is my visiting uncle.
I have no more pics or information about the
car’s construction or modification.
We were students with a try-it-and-see approach to construction.
My father obtained the spares and got some chassis members adapted and we did some crude welding, I think the floor was marine ply.
I took a more serious approach to car building when
I married and settled down. Skills and record keeping improved!
I restored car marques based on the Triumph Herald chassis.
Over the years I have restored in my spare time, assorted types of Vitesse, Herald, GT6, and Spitfires.
I have attached a couple of examples, you might like to see.

Robert would be interested in hearing from anyone that has owned the car he originally built, as would I,
so
