1960 Ashley 1172 Roadster
Registration No. 529 FBJ
It was in June 2022 that I had
this message from Dudley Westgate:
Hi, I owned an 1172 Ashley Roadster in the mid 1960's and have a photograph of it back then, which I can forward to you if you are interested.
Dudley Westgate.
Dudley Westgate.
I replied that I was very interested, thanked him for contacting me
and said that I would also like to hear how he came to own it
and how long he had it and any stories of his time with it,
also did he know what the registration number was.
I asked if it was shown on my Archive list and if not I would
add it and publish a webpage for it.
I hoped he was well and had avoided the Covid as I had and that I was looking forward to seeing the photo and hearing his story.

A few weeks later he replied,
Morning Ivor,
Here is the picture of my Ashley Special from c1966. I was living in Arkesden, Essex at the time, so not far from Epping.

The car had uprated everything, although a bit more effort could have been put into the brakes.
I re-call ending up on the grass verge in front of Audley End Mansion trying to avoid stationary traffic.
In the picture foreground my sensible sisters Mini.
Regards, Dudley

I thanked Dudley and asked if the registration number was clearer
on his photo and if he had any idea what the windscreen was off,
it being unusual having the wrap around glass.
I also asked if he had built the car or if was it already made
when he purchased it and if so did he remember the builders
name and or location.
It all helps making the webpage more interesting and complete.
Next day I got a reply confirming the Registration Number.
Morning Ivor,
From my photo here the Rego. No. appears to be 529 FBJ.

(I checked the DVLA online register and the car's Rego. No.
does not appear to have made it onto their database, which
normally indicates that it has not survived past the late 1970's,
that's not to say that it isn't in someone's garage/barn awaiting
to be discovered or has been re-registered and given
new "age related plates".
Checking in my book of UK Registration's it tells me that the car was
originally registered by the East Suffolk C.C. in June 1960)

Dudley's message continued,
It was purchased from a local garage in Bishop's Stortford (already completed), I was not involved with the build in any way. I re-call it had the most amazing tubular chassis and was generally in good condition.
I kept it for less than 12 months and traded it in for a 1947 split rear screen VW Beetle as I needed 4 seats and a roof.
Sorry but I cannot add much more to the story.

I thanked Dudley again and said I would add his story to
my website and archive list.
I do sometimes get an email from an owner that has seen the Ashley page my website and say's "Hi I owned or built that Ashley".
